Harry Bertoia (1915 - 1978) Harry Bertoia was born March 10, 1915 at Arzene in Italy and died November 6, 1978 in Barto, United States. He studied art and design at Cass Technical High School and learned how to make handcrafted jewelry before he was granted a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. In 1939, he opened a workshop to teach metalwork and jewellery making. Some time later he turned his skills to wedding rings and developed the marital jewelry for Charles and Ray Eames. He married Brigitta Valentiner in 1943 and moved to California where he created his own studio. He worked on behalf of Charles and Ray Eames. In 1950, he moved to Pennsylvania to work with Hans and Florence Knoll developing five products, including the famous Diamond chair. Strong 1950s sales allowed him to devote himself to pure sculpture, producing more than 50 sculptures before in his death.
